We discussed this FASCINATING study yesterday in our weekly live zoom talks. I will be talking about it on YouTube as well. Will share once I have recorded it.
It has cleared up so many of my questions for reduced exercise capacity and post-exertional malaise in Long COID patients.
Summary of the study is the following:
1. Muscle biopsies were done on long COVID patients before and after strenuous exercises to trigger post-exertional malaise.
2. Biopsies showed muscle fiber atrophy, necrosis, and A SHIFT TOWARDS glycolytic fibers and away from the OXIDATIVE fibers. That is, the muscle fiber types changed.
3. Deposition of amyloids in the muscle.
4. Low quality of the mitochondrial function.
5. More glycolytic ATP generation than oxidative phosphorylation.
6. Infiltration of macrophages and T cells.
7. No B cells infiltration.
8. No capillary blockage, or endotheliitis.
10. No clots in the blood vessels.
11. No issues with the cardiovascular system.
12. Muscle recovered in about a week.
