Neuropathic pain is more than just a concept or a single disorder; rather, it is a diverse collection of established clinical and experimental conditions. These conditions share the commonality of perpetuating pain symptoms or pain-related behaviors due to neural tissue injury beyond simple nociception. Although neuropathic pain is often defined as arising from damage to the peripheral or central nervous system, there is evidence suggesting that some conditions within this category involve active nociceptors at the original injury site, leading to a mixed nociceptive–neuropathic pattern. Additionally, certain neuropathic disorders result from abnormal neural communication through autonomic nervous system pathways, such as complex regional pain syndromes and sympathetically maintained pain.
